using third-person self-talk to create psychological distance and stabilize performance under pressure. The mechanism is well-supported. A small change in language allows the mind to regulate itself more effectively.</p><p>But the implications of this are broader than technique.</p><p>When you say, &#8220;Srini, stay with this,&#8221; there is an implicit division. There is the part of you that is experiencing uncertainty, and another part that is addressing it. The moment that distinction becomes clear, it raises a fundamental question: which of these is the self?</p><p>Most people identify with the first voice they encounter. The anxious thought feels like the self. The doubt feels like the self. But the act of speaking to that voice suggests otherwise. It reveals that what appears first is not necessarily what is most fundamental.</p><p>There are, at minimum, multiple layers operating simultaneously. A reactive layer that responds quickly to perceived threat. A regulatory layer that can observe and redirect. And potentially, something deeper that is not defined by either.</p><p>From a psychological perspective, this is useful. It allows for flexibility. One can move from reactivity to regulation. But from a spiritual perspective, it opens a different line of inquiry.</p><p>If there is an anxious self and a non-anxious self, both are still states. Both arise and change. Neither is stable enough to serve as a final identity.</p><p>This is where classical concepts such as <strong>Sat-Chit-Ananda</strong> become relevant&#8212;not as abstract philosophy, but as a description of a different level of experience. Sat refers to being, Chit to awareness, and Ananda to a form of underlying ease or completeness that is not contingent on external conditions.</p><p>From this perspective, confidence is not something that needs to be constructed. It is what remains when identification with fluctuating mental states loosens. The anxious voice may still appear. The regulating voice may still respond. But neither fully defines the individual.</p><p>The third-person technique, then, is not just a tool. It is an entry point. It shows that distance from thought is possible. And once that distance is recognized, it becomes easier to ask what lies beyond both the thought and the response to it.</p><p>In practical terms, this does not mean abandoning technique. It means understanding its limits. Third-person self-talk can stabilize performance, but it does not resolve the deeper question of identity. For that, a different kind of attention is required.</p><p>Confidence, at this deeper level, is less about managing internal states and more about recognizing that awareness itself is not destabilized by them. When attention rests there, action becomes less constrained by fluctuation.</p><p>This is sometimes described, in less technical language, as aligning with a more unified field of consciousness. The language varies across traditions, but the underlying idea is consistent: when identification narrows, experience fragments; when it widens, experience stabilizes.</p><p><strong>To explore this more directly, the following approaches can be useful.</strong></p>

relationship. Here, I want to go further.</p><p>Because gratitude is not just psychological.<br>It is existential.<br>And increasingly, it appears to have biological underpinnings as well.</p><h3>Gratitude as the recognition of relationship</h3><p>Gratitude always begins with <em>someone or something else</em>.</p><p>That matters, because the brain evolved not merely to survive&#8212;but to relate. When gratitude is felt, it signals that the world is not only a source of threat, but also of support.</p><p>This subtle shift has profound consequences.</p><h3>Gratitude, the brain, and threat reduction</h3><p>Neuroscience suggests that gratitude activates circuits associated with reward, care, and social bonding, including regions linked to giving and caregiving.</p><p>A randomized controlled trial showed that individuals who increased gratitude-related support-giving exhibited:</p><ul><li><p>Reduced amygdala reactivity (less threat response)</p></li><li><p>Lower inflammatory markers (TNF-&#945;, IL-6)</p></li></ul><p>Crucially, reductions in threat reactivity mediated reductions in inflammation.</p><p>This implies that gratitude may benefit health not directly&#8212;but by quieting the brain&#8217;s alarm systems through connection.</p><h3>Gratitude and longevity</h3><p>A large prospective study of nearly 50,000 older adults found that higher levels of gratitude were associated with lower all-cause mortality, even after controlling for:</p><ul><li><p>Physical health</p></li><li><p>Mental health</p></li><li><p>Social participation</p></li><li><p>Lifestyle factors</p></li></ul><p>Those with higher gratitude also showed reduced risk of cardiovascular death.</p><p>This is the first strong evidence linking grateful affect to longer life.</p><p>Not because gratitude is magic&#8212;but because it appears to reshape how the brain interprets and responds to the world.</p>

patterns of brain activity when imagining the future</p></li><li><p>Less optimistic individuals show highly idiosyncratic, fragmented neural patterns</p></li><li><p>Optimists distinguish positive and negative future events more clearly</p></li><li><p>Positive events are represented vividly</p></li><li><p>Negative events are represented more abstractly &#8212; creating emotional caring&#8212;it&#8217;s about entering into another&#8217;s world with your whole self. Neuroscience gives us a useful framework:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Emotional empathy</strong> activates circuits that allow us to <em>feel</em> with others.</p></li><li><p><strong>Cognitive empathy</strong> activates the brain&#8217;s mentalizing networks, which enable us to imagine another person&#8217;s perspective.</p></li></ul><p>Both are essential, but neither is complete if we leave out a third element: the <em>self</em> that brings them to life. Because here&#8217;s the truth: you cannot sustain empathy if you&#8217;re operating from depletion. When caring drains you, empathy collapses into fatigue, obligation, or even resentment.</p><p>This is why self-actualization is essential. Self-actualization is not about selfishness or self-indulgence. It&#8217;s about uncovering and living from the deepest part of yourself&#8212;the place where your energy is most authentic. When you operate from this core, empathy stops being a performance and becomes a natural expression of who you are. You&#8217;re not &#8220;trying&#8221; to be empathetic; you <em>are</em> empathetic, because you&#8217;re not weighed down by insecurity, exhaustion, or the constant need for approval.</p><p>Think about it this way: if empathy is a bridge, self-actualization is the foundation on your side of the river. Without that foundation, you can still stretch toward others&#8212;but only for so long before the bridge collapses. When you are deeply connected to yourself, you give from the power of who you are not from deficit.</p><p>But this shift requires more than logical reflection. It requires a kind of faith in yourself&#8212;a belief that who you are, in your fullness, is enough. It calls for courage to explore your inner world and confront the truths you might rather avoid. And it demands a willingness to live authentically, even when others might not respond in the way you&#8217;d like.</p><p>When you move toward self-actualization, empathy deepens. You stop measuring whether someone appreciates your care or whether your efforts &#8220;worked.&#8221; Instead, you show up fully, grounded in your own being. Paradoxically, this frees you to accept others as they are&#8212;because you no longer need them to validate you.</p><p>This is what I mean when I say empathy requires more than technique. instinct and the brain&#8217;s conflict alarms can keep you from changing.</p><p>But here&#8217;s the thing: <em>that&#8217;s only the beginning.</em></p><p>There&#8217;s a whole other layer &#8212; powerful cognitive biases, hidden fears about success, guilt about outgrowing your world, and a temperament that resists openness. These don&#8217;t just delay change&#8230; they can quietly steal decades.</p><p>As one palliative care study revealed, the number one regret of the dying is this: <em>&#8220;I wish I&#8217;d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.&#8221;</em></p><p>When most people talk about the &#8220;cost of change,&#8221; they mean the effort, money, or time it will take. But that&#8217;s only the surface. Beneath it lies a tangled web of brain biases and psychological forces<strong> </strong>that can silently tether you to the familiar &#8212; even when the familiar is quietly hurting you.</p><p>One of the most powerful of these is post-decisional bias. Once we&#8217;ve made a choice, our brains lean heavily toward justifying it &#8212; even when that choice is no longer serving us. This bias spares us the sting of regret and preserves a sense of consistency, but it also locks us into relationships, careers, habits, and ways of thinking long past their natural expiration date.</p><p>Then there are the <strong>unconscious forces</strong> that rarely make it into everyday conversations:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Fear of success</strong> &#8211; Worrying that achieving your goals will bring unwanted attention, new responsibilities, or a painful loss of connection with people who knew you &#8220;before.&#8221;</p></li><li><p><strong>Fear of boundary loss</strong> &#8211; Believing that if you open to something new, you&#8217;ll lose control or be swept away by other people&#8217;s demands.</p></li><li><p><strong>Guilt about surpassing others</strong> &#8211; A hidden loyalty to your family, peers, or old identity that whispers, <em>Don&#8217;t outgrow us.</em></p></li></ul><p>Your temperament adds another layer. Psychologists call it openness to experience &#8212; a personality trait linked to curiosity, creativity, and willingness to explore. Low openness often drives people toward routine, control, and predictability. These qualities can be stabilizing in the right amounts, but in excess, they shrink the range of life until it feels suffocating.</p><p>And here&#8217;s the haunting part: many people only see this clearly at the twilight of their lives. Research on end-of-life regrets consistently shows the same theme:</p><blockquote><p><em>&#8220;I wish I&#8217;d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote><p>That courage is not about reckless leaps &#8212; it&#8217;s about loosening the psychic and neural chains that make <em>staying stuck </em>feel safer than <em>becoming alive</em>.</p>

But most of what we experience is a subjective construction<strong> </strong>filtered through our emotional history, identity, culture, and time frame.</p><h3><strong>Trauma, Time, and Tunneling</strong></h3><p>When you&#8217;ve been through pain or betrayal, your brain often shifts into a <strong>short-term survival lens,</strong> narrowing perspective. This &#8220;tunnel vision&#8221; is helpful in emergencies but harmful when you&#8217;re making life decisions.</p><p>We often:</p><ul><li><p>Stick to short-term safety</p></li><li><p>Avoid taking long-term risks</p></li><li><p>Miss the bigger picture</p></li></ul><p>But there&#8217;s a middle path: Multiple Short-Term Perspective Taking Steps</p><ul><li><p>Ask: <em>What can I do in the next hour?</em></p></li><li><p>Then ask: <em>What might this look like in 1 month, 6 months, or 5 years?</em></p></li><li><p>Then zoom in again: <em>What would I need to CRUSH the next month?</em></p></li></ul><p>This ping-ponging of temporal perspective creates a flexible brain, increasing both motivation and meaning.</p><h3><strong>Perspective and the Brain</strong></h3><p>Sustained experience shapes neural circuits:</p><ul><li><p>Cultural experience affects perceptual areas in the <strong>ventral visual cortex.</strong></p></li><li><p>A pilot fMRI study using a realistic 3D setup found:</p><ul><li><p>When subjects were asked to take a <strong>third-person visual perspective (VPRT)</strong>, there was <strong>significantly higher brain activation</strong> in:</p><ul><li><p>The <strong>bilateral visual cortex</strong></p></li><li><p>The <strong>left temporoparietal junction (TPJ)</strong> &#8212; the region associated with shifting from your own viewpoint to someone else&#8217;s.</p></li></ul></li><li><p>Subjects were <em>less accurate</em> and <em>slower</em> during the third-person task compared to a first-person memory task, highlighting the <strong>cognitive cost</strong> of shifting perspective.</p></li></ul><blockquote><p>This suggests:<br>Perspective-taking in real-world environments isn&#8217;t automatic&#8212;it&#8217;s a high-level spatial and cognitive skill that requires <strong>attentional resources and neural coordination.</strong></p></blockquote></li></ul><p><em>Translation:</em> Changing how you see things isn&#8217;t just philosophy&#8212;it&#8217;s rewiring.</p><h3><strong>Perspective Taking in Negotiation</strong></h3><p>According to a Harvard Business Review article, <strong>cognitive empathy</strong> (understanding how someone thinks) outperforms <strong>emotional empathy</strong> (feeling their emotions) in complex negotiations.
